Julio Rodriguez
Born and raised in Ecuador, the son of Spanish and American parents, Julio developed a passion for storytelling and environmental conservation at an early age. After majoring in History at Carleton College (Minnesota), with a thesis on the Basque anti-Franco movement, he taught English in Spain and made short promotional films for an energy efficiency company in India and two environmental conservation NGOs in Greece and Galapagos.
Due to his interest in indigenous people and the crucial role they play by conserving the world’s last carbon sinks, he pursued a Master's degree in Anthropology at KU Leuven (Belgium), conducting two months of ethnographic research with the Cofán people of the Ecuadorian Amazon rainforest. While conducting research, he also produced a series of films to support their community projects. After graduating, he conducted an environmental communications internship at the United Nations Environment Programme (CMS/AEWA) to support global conservation efforts.
Most recently, he has worked as an environmental communications officer at the Charles Darwin Foundation in Galapagos, where he continued to write articles and make videos to support science and conservation projects. At Lindblad Expeditions-National Geographic he has worked as a Video Chronicler in Galapagos, Alaska, Costa Rica/Panama, and Iceland. While he pursues an Anthropology PhD at the University of Oxford, he is thrilled to continue working as a video chronicler whenever possible. On land, Julio enjoys learning languages, writing, dancing, supporting indigenous people and environmental conservation, or letting his wanderlust take him on a spontaneous adventure.
