Floreana Island
It was six in the morning when the voice of Lynn, our Expedition Leader, came through the main cabin speakers. "Rise and shine, it is beautiful out here," she said. I have no doubt of her words since many times before I have said the same thing, almost being certain of the incredible day to come.
We headed to the post office bay to visit perhaps one of the most famous areas in the Galápagos, the post office barrel. It was as quiet as it can get at six thirty in the morning, but our voices broke the silence and the mystique that had surrounded this place for centuries. Floreana Island is a place of traditions and mysteries that even at present day haven’t been completely solved and unveiled, and we doubt that the truth will ever emerge.
Many visitors had made their way to Floreana; whalers, buccaneers and privateers during the late seventeen hundreds, and by the beginning of the nineteen hundreds the island was well known in the world. It was here where the chronicles of a toothless dentist (as bizarre as that might sound), a self proclaimed Baroness traveling with three lovers, and common farmers from Germany would merge. You could imagine the “juicy story” that one might get combining all the different personalities throughout the island's history, and yet every possible combination would end in potential disaster. There have been many books written about the Floreana history, but the truth lays perhaps already six feet under, and even after all our readings we can only speculate what had really happened here.
Our experience today proved to be quite different, though. All what I need to tell you is that when I saw the sunrise this morning I imagined a day full of experiences involving laughs, laughter, knowledge, and passion! We got all that and more, and the sunset was priceless!
