Floreana Island
Today we had a marvelous day visiting the island of Floreana located in the southern realm of Galápagos. Our morning started with a visit to Post Office Bay: in the late 1700’s a mail system was established through a barrel where anyone who visited this bay could leave mail and also take the post left by other sailors. In order to fulfill this tradition, those who picked up the mail have to hand-deliver it to the destination. In our days we still follow that same tradition and after looking through the mail, some of our guests took letters while others left postcards to be taken by future visitors.
Later in the morning we took our Zodiacs for swimming and snorkeling around Champion islet which is one the most amazing places. Here the main attraction is swimming with Galápagos sea lions. One of the surprises this morning was a marine iguana feeding underwater for more than ten minutes while snorkelers watched it from the surface.
During the afternoon some guests went for another snorkeling outing around Devil’s Crown islet, which is a unique place for its great variety of fish and marine invertebrates. There also was the option of taking kayaks in the gorgeous bays along the coast of Floreana. During the walk this afternoon we visited Cormorant Point and several colorful flamingoes were observed. In addition there were some very young chicks which were seen walking away from their nests to explore the surrounding area. We returned aboard for our evening recap accompanied by cocktails and dinner on the Sky Deck.
