Southern Isabela Island
It was very early in the morning when we had our eager guests getting ready for an early start; this would involve a hike to a nearby Volcano called Sierra Negra. After an energizing breakfast, we disembarked at Puerto Villamil and a forty five minute ride on the local “taxi trucks” set up the beginning of our experience. We were then dropped to start our walk at the farthest point were the trucks could get, and from then we set off by foot to climb out our volcano. Once there, young lava flows in the inside of the caldera could be appreciated from its main rim. We kept walking for seven miles round trip to and back from the volcano, enjoying not only the view but the different patterning in vegetation and the bird watching along the way. There were some of the guests that decided to stay in the vicinities of town, and of course many options were offered, as well.
After recuperating our energy with a great buffet lunch and a well deserved siesta, we disembarked again at the main dock of Puerto Villamil for our afternoon outing. We took our guests to observe the main Rearing Center for the Galápagos Giant Tortoises. Naturalists exposed the importance of this conservation strategy to restore and preserve the dynasty of the giant land tortoises, not only in Isabela Island but in the entire archipelago. Once done with our visit, we all headed back to town to enjoy a great time by the beach. There was much action going on there, since our guests were engaged on a volleyball and soccer match with the local boys and girls. It was a lot of fun to see them play and to cheer for our eager players.
We have all once again enjoyed another wonderful day in paradise.
