Los Islotes & Isla Espiritu Santo
We were greeted this morning by the barking of sea lions as we were anchored by the small islets of Los Islotes off the end of Isla Partida Sur. We did our morning stretch on the sun deck bathed by the golden glow of the sunrise.
We started this beautiful morning, shortly after breakfast, with Zodiac explorations. We were greeted by the roaring sound of the sea lions- some were simply sunbathing, napping or stretching. Others were frolicking in the water, swimming and jumping alongside our Zodiacs as we circled around this bountiful island.
Joining in one of these three activities were frigatebirds, blue-footed and brown boobies, brown pelicans, turkey vultures and Sally Lightfoot crabs. Some of us even had a glimpse of a squadron of Mobula rays feeding on plankton in this nutrient rich water before we headed back to mother ship.
We took advantage of this excellent spot for snorkeling, we quickly changed into our wet suits for underwater explorations. We were promptly greeted by the frisky sea lions, nibbling at our fins, bumping into us, obviously delighted to go swimming and diving with us. Schools of king angelfish, giant damselfish, and yellow tailed surgeonfish joined us on this expedition too!
We headed towards the southern end of Isla Espiritu Santo to Bahia Bonanza after lunch. However, our journey was detoured by sighting of a large group of lively dolphins. The dolphins swam gracefully along side the ship, but eventually paced swiftly ahead of us.
Back on track, we came ashore to the beach. We managed to fit in kayaking, hiking and the young guests were treated to a Zodiac driving lesson, until sunset. The wind picked up as the Zodiacs whisked us back to the National Geographic Sea Bird for farewell cocktails.
We concluded this glorious, adventurous day with a Christmas Buffet feasting on turkey, rabbit mole, and salmon with all the trimmings!
