Santa Cruz Island

The October moon is hanging above the island. Not a star can be seen in the sky, yet a Cheshire’s cat grin is surrounded by a hazy glow, reflected in the ocean surface leading from the sharp coastline to offshore ship. This afternoon’s journey by Zodiac was experienced with enthusiasm by all. White-tipped reef shark and golden rays like fallen autumn leaves in still waters at the mangrove’s edge.

Overcast skies turn to bronze as the sun lowers on the western horizon behind the Guy Fawkes Islets, Duncan and Isabela islands. A double rainbow appears briefly over the Daphnes and Baltra. We have begun our journey through the islands lost in time. Ahead of us lie individuals of other species, living lives which will intersect with ours for a few minutes or hours, affected by our presence… or perhaps not.
