Española Island
Today was a beautiful sunny day. In the morning we started our activities with a walk on Punta Suarez, located at the western part of the island. This visitor site is a real highlight. All our guests were amazed to experience how close we can get to all the animals that live there. Sea lions, marine iguanas, blue-footed boobies, Galapagos hawks, waved albatrosses, Darwin finches and some others were the delight of our astonished visitors. During this time of the year there are many newborn baby sea lions. These pups were certainly the favorite of most of us.
In the afternoon we had aquatic activities, and some of our guests went snorkeling. The water was very clear and they saw many tropical colorful fish. Others went to see the underwater world without getting wet using the glass bottom boat. The rest went to the beach in Gardner Bay. This white, coraline beach is one of the most beautiful ones in Galapagos. The contrast between the aquamarine water and the pure white sand of the beach is breathtaking. A real addition to the beauty of the beach is a very big colony of sea lions that is found there. Again the cute baby sea lions stole the show. But today we had a surprise…we found a flamingo on the beach! This is a very unusual sighting there. In fact it is the first one I have ever seen on Española, an island where there is no lagoon at all to be home for flamingos.
The flamingo with its characteristic awkward appereance and its long legs claimed the attention of all. It was a juvenile flamingo. The only explanation I can find why this juvenile bird was on Española today, is that it got lost. However, it was very interesting to see this bird in such an extremely unusual place together with sea lions.
