Fernandina Island
The magic of the Galapagos enchanted all of us today. Our day started early in the morning with a wonderful encounter with a pod of cheerful common dolphins. In the afternoon when anchored close to Punta Espinoza on Fernandina Island we spotted some blows in the distance. WHALES! WHALES! was the general call, immediately Zodiacs were lowered and we went to see the whales. This was just the beginning of an unforgettable experience. Several Bryde’s whales were observed all over the place. These tropical cetaceans were feeding! The excitement reached to the limit when some of them were just a few feet away from the Zodiacs blowing. After at least one hour watching them we disembarked on the island. Some of our guests took the long walk option walking to a marvelous lava field. Some preferred a shorter version. All enjoyed the unique wildlife. Hundreds of marine iguanas, baby flightless cormorants and sea lions were by general consensus the favorites. To top the day we spotted whales on the way coming back to the Polaris once again! This time Bryde’s whales were part of a big feeding frenzy that included hundreds of blue footed boobies. Just when we thought the day could not get any better we saw something spectacular… A WHALE SHARK! This shark is the largest living fish nowadays. It can reach up to 47 feet length and weight fifteen tons. Its mouth is four feet wide. Despite its gigantic size they feed on plankton and fish. A fiery sunset with orange, red and purplish colors put a golden finale to a truly extraordinary and exciting day on this magical archipelago. Reluctantly but with our spirits filled with emotions, we came finally back on board.
