Fernandina Island

Feeling the wind on our faces, speeding up to reach dolphins and whales, surrounded by deep and dark ocean, what else can I mention: this is the very reason why I wake up every day on these islands.

On a Zodiac commanded by Jinsop and another by Henry, we drove for almost 2 miles off shore. At a certain point it did not matter anymore if we saw the cetaceans or not, it just counted that we were there, feeling Galapagos in our very skin.

But we did see the whales: tropical whales. In the morning we had seen at least 500 common dolphins, and around Roca Redonda, even earlier, we had encountered bottle-nosed dolphins.

When one is out at sea, surrounded on all sides by birds in flight and the spouts of sea mammals, it doesn’t matter how many or what species. What matters is where: where we feel it. And we felt Galapagos really deep in our hearts today.
