Floreana Island
We awoke at the mystery Island, Floreana. Before breakfast, our early raisers wanted to visit a place that is part of the Galápagos history, Post Office Bay, where British whalers once used the bay as the only way to communicate with their families. As tradition dictates we were leaving our postcards without any stamps. Some of the postcards were made especially for this occasion by our youngest guests, in the hope that someday someone would take them to their final destination. Soon afterwards we enjoyed a Zodiac ride along ‘La Loberia,’ where we spotted baby black tipped reef sharks, sting rays, pacific green sea turtles, Galápagos penguins and sea lions! It was an awesome morning; however this was only the beginning of an outstanding day at the Enchanted Islands.
After a well deserved breakfast, we were ready for the next adventure, and this time, Champion Islet was the best place to enjoy an unbelievable snorkeling. Here we saw large schools of king angelfish, black stripped salemas, yellow tailed surgeonfish, white tipped reef sharks and the most spectacular display of sea lions underwater! Happy faces were only seen as we headed back on board the Polaris.
Before lunch, we all could learn more about fur seals from a presentation held by John Francis from National Geographic Society, a biologist who studies these amazing animals. Many good questions were posed right afterwards, as our guests are eager to learn more about fur seals and sea lions.
In the afternoon, we repositioned our ship to Punta Cormorant. Some of our guests took the option of drift snorkeling at Devil’s Crown, others decided to kayak, and our younger guests used their time at the beach. However, we all had time to go on the hike, which started at a green beach covered by olivine crystals. Close by was a brackish water lagoon, where flamingos usually are found. Around twenty flamingos were around, some of them nesting. It was a long day, however a day where expectations were exceeded. We will dream about today’s adventure, but many more are to come, as we are heading to the western side of the archipelago, where more surprises await us!
