Floreana Island

Today we started with a pre-breakfast outing to Post Office Bay, where over two hundred years ago we believe an English captain named James Colnet set up a barrel system where whalers could drop their letters, and in the most cases it was the only link between those sailors and their homes. When the ships were heading back to their countries, they had the task to deliver the mail to their destinations. We still keep this tradition, with the only difference that now the task has been passed onto the guests that visit this enchanted side of the archipelago.

After breakfast we were ready to explore the underwater world of the Galápagos Marine Reserve and to play with the Galápagos Sea Lions. Most of our guests agreed that the highlights were during the snorkeling outing such as the stone scorpion fish, sea stars, Moorish idols, and lots of tropical fish.

Our afternoon outing involved some snorkeling as well, but this time was done over one Devil’s crown where plenty of pelagic fish were observed by the snorkelers. Some others decided that kayaking was the way to explore the island, and headed to an intricate system of mangrove and lava water ways which turned out to be just great!

Later on, everyone had the chance to explore Punta Cormorant, were the sand on the beach has a green coloration because of the grains of olivine crystals found along the coast line. It was also a good time to see flamingos with their characteristic pink color in their plumage. Thire color was a vivid bright pink which contrasted spectacularly with the black lava rocks in the background.

Another beautiful day in the Galápagos, and yet we know there will be so many more to come that we can hardly wait…
