Hood Island

Española, being the oldest and one of the closest islands to South America has an advantage over the other islands: it has more probabilities for new arrivals. That is why Hood Island holds a large percentage of endemic species. Today we have been greeted by some of them; the marine iguanas were in bright red color, mockingbirds were very active along the trail, lava lizards were running or posing in the middle of the trail and the waved albatrosses were dancing, nesting, taking off from the cliff and gliding in the air.

The hike that we did this morning was full of excitement, and the water activities we ended up doing in the afternoon were magnificent: deep water snorkeling, glass bottom boat, kayaking and beach snorkeling. However the walk along the beach in Gardner Bay was unforgettable, the place was full of sea lions, some of them just a couple of days old or a couple of weeks old. This is the age when they are very curious and playful.

One of their favorite activities is to play with the marine iguana’s tails in the water, or on land - and it is this type of behavior or interaction among the species what makes our visits so enjoyable.
