A lapis sky with the sharp peaks of the Fairweather Range (visible only in fair weather!) created the backdrop of our stage this day. Azure fragments of ice emerged from hiding under a blanket of snow in cirques and valleys. Densely packed crystals of frozen water at the base of a glacier absorbed the long wavelengths of light, releasing only the shortest, most energetic to our eyes, a color indescribable, deep and untangible. The water beneath our ship flowed as a palette of paints, greys to turquoise to navy, as glacial flour, pulverized rock, escaped from its freshwater trap and reflected only blue. Sunshine in Glacier Bay swept warmth around us, its colors filling us with ecstasy.
