Boca de Soledad

This morning some of us went out on a sunrise whale watch. Our quarry would be the gray whale. The air was still and there were numerous whales about the Zodiacs and the ship. Towards the end of the tour when we were thinking about heading back to a little warmth and a nice breakfast, it started to happen. A cow/calf pair of whales swam towards our little boat instead of simply maintaining their course up the canal. The mother would swim under the Zodiacs and then come up right underneath her young calf and lift its head out of the water for us to see. She did this a number of times. The calf was very small, probably only a few weeks old. The mother is just below the calf in the picture pushing her young one towards our boat. It was a magic moment for all involved.
