A star is born….Some highlights of Los Islotes include California Sea lions as well as numerous species of unique and brilliant color invertebrates. Red light is the first color in the electromagnetic spectrum that is absorbed as it passes through the water column. As a result of this phenomenon organisms that are red in color often look bluish due to the fact that blue light rays are not absorbed but reflected. To capture the beauty of this Panamic cushion star (Pentaceraster cumingi) artificial lighting needed to be used. Characteristics of this sea star include an inflated body wall, lack of spines on the oral side, and tube feet, which are well hidden in the ambulacral grooves. Interestingly a beneficial relationship exists between this species and a shrimp know as Periclimenes soror. The shrimp gets food and protection out of the relationship while the cushion star gets to be cleaned on a regular basis by its full time resident tenant.
