Pucker up for a kiss… Today at Elephant rock off of Santa Catalina Island, snorkelers enjoyed seeing a fish known as a balloonfish or barred porcupinefish (Diodon holocanthus). This seemingly friendly one was caught in the act of trying to kiss its own reflection in the camera lens. True to its name, the mouth of this fish is capable of inhaling large quantities of water to increase its size up to three-fold. This trait along with the anatomic adaptation of being armed with large spines that fold out from the skin, make this cute fish a difficult meal for a predator. As far as human consumption is concerned they are generally considered non-edible as well.
