Astoria,
This morning was the beginning of a beautiful day in the most western spot visited on our trip along the Columbia River. The town of Astoria was settled by the Astor party who quickly followed Lewis & Clark once they had made their way to the coast. Our first excursion this morning was to the Maritime museum, which has a fascinating collection of historical artifacts from some of the many shipwrecks that occurred near the mouth of the Columbia River. Later this morning we went to the 1805 winter home of the Corps of Discovery at Fort Clatsop. The weather we enjoyed was quite a departure from that which the Corps had to deal with during their stay, while we had sunny and warm skies, they had rain, fog, snow, cold, and misery for almost 5 months. We enjoyed the recreation of the fort and its forested surroundings.
After lunch we traveled to the Astor column and had a stupendous view of the town of Astoria and the Columbia Bar beyond it.
