Glacier Bay National Park

Today provided one spectacle of nature after another, beginning with the sea lions at South Marble Island. As a bonus, a humpback whale suddenly appeared as if on cue to circle the island in search of food. Puffins placidly riding the undulating water seemed both startled and frightened as they suddenly took to the air as the foraging whale passed by. Not long after this, mountain goats provided a mountainside demonstration of their amazing surefootedness. Late in the afternoon, killer whales added yet another chapter to the book of natural wonders opened to us in Glacier Bay National Park. But that was not all. Throughout the day we felt as if we were present at the creation of a new world of green plants that was emerging from seemingly barren rock scoured and exposed by retreating glaciers. Johns Hopkins Glacier was a brooding presence for much of our afternoon. Today’s photo shows nearby Lamplugh Glacier. Can you spot the ship dwarfed by the massive face of the glacier?
