Frederick Sound/Saginaw Bay
Fog was the operative word of the morning. We awakened to thick fog, but by breakfast it had lifted enough to permit us to look for whales and other wildlife. Throughout the day the wispy fog added a painterly touch to the landscape. This morning we watched humpback whales feeding, and just before dinner we watched killer whales. Part of the excitement is not knowing where (or how) the whales will surface next. Some whales rise to the surface in a leisurely manner, while others will occasionally burst through the placid surface in a spectacular explosion of natural exuberance.
We spent the afternoon in a small cove off Saginaw Bay. While some of us kayaked, others took nature walks along a seashore rich in marine life and fossils. A short portion of the trail took us into a small section of the Alaskan temperate rain forest that resembles a natural cathedral. Kayakers enjoyed the special solitude that comes from paddling across the dark surface of the water.
