Los Islotes & Ensenada Grande
We enjoyed a beautiful sunrise as The Sea Lion sailed into Los Islotes, a small rocky islet in Baja California. We could hear the calls of the California sea lions playing in the water or resting along the rocky edges, greeting us and beckoning us to visit. After breakfast, we loaded up four Zodiacs and made our way out toward the rocks for a visit. The pelicans came diving down right next to us in hopes of catching some morning fish. Blue-footed boobies soared through the air, landing next to one another and showing off their vibrant webbed toes. We made our way around the rock so see many more sea lions as well as brown boobies, Brandt’s cormorants, and a lone peregrine falcon in a cave.
After we got acquainted with the sea lions, some brave souls went for a morning snorkel to get a closer look. The sea lions were very frisky and playful, even playing around the snorkel boat, so much so that one of them got stuck in the ladder.
This afternoon the Sea Lion anchored off the coast of Ensenada Grande. Many of us enjoyed a kayak outing in clear green, slightly windy waters. It was a peaceful time with a couple other local ships floating around us. We worked hard to make our way against the wind to the other side of the cove, however getting back to the kayak beach was a breeze as the wind pushed us right along. An enjoyable hike up through mangrove lowlands and into a cactus filled arroyo capped off the afternoon’s excursions.
We saved the best for last, as we ended this eventful day with a barbeque on the beach. The hotel staff laid out a great buffet in the sunset, and we feasted as the stars came out and we could see the lights of the Sea Lion floating nearby. It was a night of chatting and mingling, relaxing by the bonfire, and winding down from an exciting day in Baja California.
