Boca de Soledad

There are some days in life that are more memorable than others; “life is made of moments”, Jorge Luis Borges wrote. And today was one of those unforgettable days, one that everyone onboard will treasure forever. It all began in total isolation from the outside world, as the Sea Lion awoke surrounded by a dense fog. We were only a couple miles north of the fishing town of López Mateos, but we could have been a thousand miles from anywhere as well. Silence was only broken by the sound of whale’s blows nearby. The fog slowly dissipated and we were soon among the gray whales; dozens of them slowly cruised around, their explosive exhalations the only sound to be heard. Mothers with their young babies frolicking around, each one exhibiting their unique personalities: some baby whales seemed to be more curious, some more adventurous, some shy. Just like us! To be able to witness each baby’s personality is a privilege and something that I would never tire of doing. Some were definitely curious and closely inspected our Zodiacs, whereas another seemed engaged in some kind of competition and breached more times than I could remember!

We continued our visit to the whales in the afternoon and accumulated many more memories. Breaching whales, whales spy hoping! A whale of a day! And in order to celebrate such a marvelous day we enjoyed a delectable dinner brought onboard by a local restaurant. All in all, a most memorable day, the kind of day that I live for!
