Boca de Soledad
After a sound night’s sleep, thanks to a night of being anchored at the Boca de Soledad, we woke to a peaceful morning with gray whale blows all around us. As the sun rose over the Baja peninsula, the birds were on their morning commute from their evening roost. Seeing several gray whales passing the Sea Lion at her anchorage at the northern tip of Isla Magdalena, we knew that this was the day we had been waiting for: to get in our Zodiacs and search for those gray whales! We spent our entire day in this well-known gray whale nursery lagoon, and were thrilled to see a plethora of behaviors: spy hopping, breaching, lunging, and the constant tactile play between mother and baby.
Our sense of sight was only one of the ways in which we experienced these whales. We were also treated to the whoosh sound as they forcefully exhaled, followed by the hollow sound of their inhalation. Depending on the wind direction, at times we were misted by their breath. The other sound that was a constant in our day was the roar of the waves from the Pacific breaking over the shallow sandbars at the Boca de Soledad, one of the few entrances into this lagoon. The fresh Pacific breeze misted our clothes with ocean spray, but couldn’t dampen our spirits. We all returned to the Sea Lion with smiles on our faces and memories to last a lifetime.
Celebrating our visit to Mexico, our evening consisted of a fiesta dinner brought to us by a well known (in some small circles) Mexican seafood restaurant in the tiny community of Lopez Mateos. We ended our evening listening to the lively music of our local musicians.
