Isla Danzante and Arroyo Blanco Norte, Isla del Carmen
Images of a day on a desert sea:

Flying fish bursting up from our bow in the morning glow, long fins flashing. Do they seek to be birds?

A giant, full moon dropping slowly to the west, behind the Sierra de la Giganta, the Mountains of the Giantess; volcanoes create treasures.

A mystery marine mammal on collision course. Dive deep into azure water before your name can be learned.

A tiny beach on The Dancer – Isla Danzante – set with thrones in shade upon which to rest after testing warm waters with kayak, snorkel, scuba.

Golden wings of birds flashing in the low sun: young flycatchers – ashen-throated; a young woodpecker chipping at arid places; cheerful redbirds, the Cardinals of this church. Rains will bring on another nesting.

A climb to a cool saddle with a view to the vermillion sea on one side and the torn peninsula on the other; San Andreas will continue its separation.

Succulent fruits of pitahaya dulce, the church organ of the desert, inviting birds, bees and humankind to slake a mighty thirst. Can the “second harvest” be far behind?

Screams of wet delight as young bodies – and old - centrifuge off a rubber banana set on a slalom course.

Bulbous black heads breaking the ocean surface, soon followed by bulbous black fins, both with spotlight-sun glinting off smooth skin; pilot whales, peeking up as we smiled down, and inspecting the black skin of towed Zodiacs.

A quiet entrance into a secret cove, walls made of millions of marine organisms, now carved by water and wind; caves made for shy fish and pirates.

Humid walks over sand dunes or in a tortuous line up an arroyo. When will water flow again?

Dinner out tonight! Ribs, burgers, salads, wine. Then s’mores at a beach fire.

A sentinel on a distant ridge surveys his domain; a desert bighorn, a true survivor in this arid wilderness.

Squid – many of them – “flying” by night under our lighted stern; food for the pilot whales who arrived too early.

To bed alive with thought, and yet tired. Another adventure begins in the morning.
