Hacienda Guachipelín & Rincón de la Vieja Volcano Guanacaste

This morning found us anchored in front of the fishing Village of El Coco. We left the Sea Voyager behind for a few hours, for the first time in our expedition, to proceed to explore one of the 5 active volcanoes of Costa Rica, El Rincón de la Vieja. Our headquarters were the facilities at a cattle ranch very close to the entrance to the park, Guachipelin cattle ranch. We had options to please all the varying interests of the guests, according to the level of challenge on the trails. The ones who wanted to go for a good work out took the long hike through a transitional forest that gave them a taste of what a rain and a dry-forest are like. Quiet a few joined a couple of the cowboys from the farm to get to the Volcano on horseback riding through forest and pasture land. Other guests took a moderate walk. Whatever their choice, everyone in the group enjoyed the beauty of the impressive mud pots at the national park where water, sediments and heat interact to perform an amazing show of boiling mud.

If that was not enough, the young crowd visited Chorreras waterfall, a small canyon like scenery were transparent and blue waters meet right at the bottom of a natural pool by the waterfall. They spent some time swimming and cooling off after a hike and then a delicious barbeque was served by the swimming pool at the ranch.

Once we arrived back to the ship, the galley prepared a cocktail hour up on the sundeck, where we exchanged experiences of the day, as the sun set and its colors closed another beautiful chapter of our Costa Rica – Nicaragua Expedition.
