Hacienda Guachipelín & Rincón de la Vieja Volcano, Guanacaste

Early this morning as we left behind Bahia Huevos, the Guanacaste Volcanic range was visible on the port side of the Sea Voyager. This range is part of the Guanacaste Conservation Area which was declared world heritage site by UNESCO in December 1999. Fifteen knot winds and a partly cloudy continental divide was our indicator that the trade winds would keep a fresh temperature during our walk the leeward side of Rincón de la Vieja Volcano.

We disembarked at 8:00 a.m. and proceeded to Hacienda Guachipelin, our main headquarters for the day. This cattle ranch runs a beautiful and scenic horseback ride in the northwestern province of Guanacaste. We had the opportunity to ride to the entrance of this park which protects the forest around one of the 5 active volcanoes of Costa Rica. Long and medium hikes through forest and open grasslands lead us to the boiling mud pots, fumarole activity and observation of some forest wildlife such as mantled howler monkeys, eastern cotton tail rabbit, white throated capuchin monkeys and blue morpho butterflies among others.

Some guests visited Chorreras waterfall, a perfect portrait of transparent and blue water cascading in a natural small pool. Afterwards on the ranch house, a barbecue lunch was served and we had the chance to take a swim in the hacienda’s pool. Back on the ship, our families enjoyed one last swim from the stern in the waters of Santa Elena Peninsula, as captain Ramos allowed us to do it since the conditions were ideal. A spectacular sunset was the culmination of a day full of adventure.
