Knitted together by threads of fog, the sea and sky merged and became one gray canvas. Boarding our expedition landing craft, we punched into the fog. We experienced a pseudo fata morgana. Without the reference of a defined horizon, icebergs loomed and levitated. Looking to the west, a fog bow was illuminated. This would be a finer mist relative of a rainbow, without the associated color spectrum. Our boats wove around and through the monochromatic landscape, a maritime hide-and-seek, until the fog slowly lifted. Spectacular shining jewels of icebergs were then fully revealed. The additional light was appreciated by those wishing to capture these ephemeral sculptures as an image.
With a clear pathway to Petersburg we proceeded on for a full afternoon of activities. Everything was complimented by a generous dose of sunny skies and a balmy summer temperature. Slightly sunburnt but entirely satisfied with the day, we returned to the National Geographic Sea Bird for our evening recap and dinner. We sat down to an epicurean banquet of Dungeness crab, a feast guaranteed to delight any palette, or at the very least, your local sea otter.
