National Geographic Sea Bird arrived at our destination on Isla Espiritu Santo, allowing for a leisurely morning. After breakfast we had an introduction to digital photography presentation by Mike, followed by one-on-one breakout sessions for individuals.
In the late morning we journeyed ashore to explore the desert terrain. Whether beachcombing, on an exercise hike, or an interpretive meander it was good to stretch our legs. This island has a good diversity of native flora and fauna, and we were lucky to see the endemic black jackrabbit and antelope ground squirrel, as well as a scorpion and some black beetles and a variety of birds—gila woodpecker, northern mockingbird, and raven.
We decided to remain at anchor for afternoon activities, since the conditions were so good. Some people tried stand-up paddleboards and kayaks for the first time. Others enjoyed the beach or went for a swim in the turquois water.
Later in the afternoon we boarded the expedition landing crafts for a visit to a magnificent frigatebird colony in San Gabriel Cove. It was quite an experience to observe and listen to the interactive spectacle of birds squawking, seducing and resting in the mangroves at dusk. They also demonstrated their superb flying abilities. This colony gets larger every year and young, whited-headed frigatebirds sit alongside the all-black adult males and white-chested adult females. What a treat in the beautiful late afternoon light!
We were back on the ship for a sunset photo opportunity, cocktails and Recap, followed by another wonderful dinner to complete the day.
