This morning we woke up in Costa Rica docked at the old rusty pier of the little port of Golfito!
After quickly clearing customs (all done by our purser behind scenes) National Geographic Quest repositioned to the mouth of the Rio Tigre where guests had the opportunity to explore the mangrove forest by Zodiac or by kayak. The visit to this very important ecosystem was very productive, and we were rewarded with great views of red-backed squirrel monkeys and two- and three-toed sloths among many other things.
In the afternoon, we repositioned again to visit the fabulous botanical garden of Casa Orquideas. The garden was created by two American expats, Ron and Trudy McAllister who have been living in this remote area for the last 37 years. Guests enjoyed the easily walkable trails which meander through perfectly groomed displays of flowers, fruits, spices, and medicinal plants of the tropics.
