This morning we arrived at the picturesque atoll of Fakarava and spent the morning exploring the main village called Rotoava. When we arrived at the dock we were greeted not only by a trio of local musicians but also by a pack of friendly dogs who followed us throughout the village.

Most of us joined the naturalists for a guided walk along the foreshore, enjoying the spectacular views of the inner lagoon – while others chose to grab a bicycle and explore the island on their own.

The highlight of the morning had to be our stop at the local church during its Sunday service, the local choir was singing all the classic hymns in a beautiful church constructed completely out of coral and shells.

After a delicious lunch on board, we enjoyed yet another spectacular snorkel with sharks off a small coral reef, while others on board went ashore to visit an ancient Polynesian sacred site called a ‘Marae.’
