When it comes to whale watching local knowledge is invaluable and sharp eyes are an eternal asset. Yesterday we heard there were blue whales just south of Isla del Carmen. The wind allowed us a northward navigation so off we went until the vigilant eyes of our third mate saw a whale blow by moonlight around 4 a.m.  We stayed in that area until daybreak and were treated ultimately to the sighting of multiple blue whales, somewhere around 10 or 12 in the area. One lone humpback whale made its best attempt to steal the show with a series of high flying breaches.
