Deep-Sea Discoveries

Capable of reaching depths of 6,000 meters, the National Geographic Society Exploration Technology Lab’s deep-sea camera system has offered a window onto some of the deepest parts of our oceanic world, including the western Pacific’s Mariana Trench. The system has collected over 11,000 hours of ocean footage across more than 500 deployments, with one in every 10 deployments resulting in a scientifically publishable discovery.

Watch National Geographic Explorer Salomé Buglass, a Marine Scientist with the Charles Darwin Foundation, describe some of the oceanic communities that the deep-sea camera has revealed in the Galápagos during its deployments aboard the Lindblad Expeditions-National Geographic fleet.
