Upon leaving Ushuaia and steaming east in the Beagle Channel last night, we have embarked on a great adventure in the Southern Ocean. With plans to visit sights along the peninsula of Antarctica, South Georgia Island and then to the Falklands before returning to South America, we hope to witness many wondrous things. This morning we awoke to the feeling of little motion as the weather was cooperating and the ship was making her way south quickly. The day was filled with activities. There was an introduction to the natural history staff and scientists who would be sharing their expertise during our journey. Later in the morning an introductory talk was given on photography with breakout sessions to get all involved ready for the image-taking that is demanded by the wildlife in the Southern Ocean.
After lunch there was another presentation, this one about the seabirds that were being seen and would be seen in the Drake Passage. There were a few albatrosses earlier in the day including this black-browed variety. At tea time a special lomito (Argentine steak sandwich) was served in wet conditions on the sun deck. It was nice bonding moment for those who braved the sprinkles and enjoyed their steak and red wine. The final get-together of the day was in the lounge and concerned our Antarctic briefing. This is mandatory for all visitors to the Antarctic.
