The sunrise awed us once again! The more clouds there are high up in the sky, the more beautiful the sunrise will be. And it was. It began with a deep red which just got better with each minute. Then a fantastic red (bell pepper red!) and until then did it begin turning yellow. We sat at the bow of our ship and simply let Mother Nature show off to us. Calm seas, a slight wind. And then we began to see the two islets called “Los Islotes,” where we were to snorkel with the sea lions. A good number of birds overflew the rocks: magnificent frigatebirds, turkey vultures, blue-footed and brown boobies, yellow-footed gulls, and more. The typical bark of these agile sea lions inundated the area, and soon we were slowly going around the rocks on our expedition landing craft. Young sea lions cavorted in the waters around us almost screaming, “I can swim better than you can!” After these tours we began snorkeling with these very intelligent little animals, the young ones playing with us in the water. The adults ignored us almost completely.
After lunch we set off sailing on the east side of Isla Espiritu Santo Island, en route down to a lovely white-sand beach, almost three miles long, Bahia Bonanza. Here we immediately set off to snorkeling in the shallow waters off the beach, hiking in the wonderful desert, and kayaking along the bay. Our undersea specialist Carlos, dove off the nearby rocks and filmed exquisite fish! The afternoon was quite sunny, but a small breeze made it fine. As soon as the dinner was ready, we enjoyed it with a fantastic view of the ocean and the nearby islands. Then, after dinner, William told us all a story of the origin of the important Aztec gods.
