This island is one of the oldest islands in Galapagos and is the first one to be inhabited. Our hike on Cormorant Point offered us an encounter with the American flamingos at the brackish lagoon. At the green beach, we enjoyed the blue footed boobies plunging while fishing. At the white beach, we had the opportunity to see a Pacific green sea turtle beaching ashore.
During the afternoon we landed on Post Office Bay. This historical site holds a post office barrel which was established in 1793, by the British whalers. Floreana is the island affected by the effects of invasive species since the visit of pirates, buccaneers and privateers. It has been recorded with the first human presence in 1807. It was also visited by Charles Darwin back in 1835; when tortoises and the Floreana mockingbirds still did exist.
We ended our day splitting up groups for either kayaking outings or zodiac rides inside the bay of the lookout. Surrounded by mangroves and lava rocks along our expedition, we saw sea turtles and two penguins. Galapagos is definitely the only place in the world presenting such an amazing combination of ecosystems.
