Sierra Negra Volcano and Puerto Villamil

Well, here we go again! Early wake up call, exquisite and nutritious breakfast and heading to Puerto Villamil, the third largest human inhabitation of the Galápagos. Once in town, seven four wheeled drive trucks were waiting for us to go to the very summit of Sierra Negra Volcano.

The arrival was somehow disheartening when we saw all the mist that covered the place at the parking lot, but after 25 minutes of hike on muddy terrain, we realized that the northern slope of the volcano was sunny and clear enough for us to see the caldera; the third largest caldera in the world. We walked as close as half a mile to the source of last years’ eruption, and we were gratified by finding Pele’s hairs and taking some photos of this impressive place.

Our ride back to town ended with no complications, and we were met on board with some extraordinary gourmet delicacies. Soon we have to be ready for the second part of the day, and it already feels like two days of activities!

In the afternoon we visited the Rearing Center for tortoises, and we were delighted by the giant tortoises, baby size as well as several immensities of an animal. Is terrible to think that these reptiles are here waiting for their places to be save again to survive, but at the same times is encouraging to know that we are doing it well, and that everybody on board could be part of this incredible success; helping protect the Galapagos.

4:30 in the afternoon and finally we are ready to enjoy some solace and relaxation. One beer please! And for the children a good sandwich and a frosty soda... put it on our bill!
