Española Island

Our previous day at the Galápagos Islands gave us so many interesting sightings that we did not know what to expect today, but after five minutes on the island, was enough to know how promising the rest of the day would be.

Española Island is one of the oldest in the archipelago and its unique volcanic conditions and landscaping had allowed the formations of natural lava reefs underwater, which is the main reason to find so much marine life at the surroundings.

We left the Polaris for Punta Suarez at about eight in the morning and after a short Zodiac ride, we encountered what I considered to be the highlight of the entire day, the birth of a new sea lion! This was an event that, as you might know, happens quite often (especially if you observe the amount of sea lions at the beaches.) What was really rare was that it happened right in front of our eyes! Being a Naturalist in the Galápagos does not assure me to see this kind of event everyday and I am so grateful that we all got to be at the right place at the right time. As I was looking at it, a whole lot of emotions started to rush throughout my body and I couldn’t help to be as astonished as our guests! Today, a new sea lion came to this world, which will translate into lots of smiles for future travelers; that is a great event to celebrate!

It was time to continue our expedition and with a huge smile we explored the island. This little island is blessed with an abundance of wildlife such as big colonies of marine iguanas, sea lions and sea birds of all kinds.

Weather was perfect and we enjoyed a cool ocean breeze as we walked through the nazca booby colonies. At the end, we discovered the area where the largest of the seabirds in the Galápagos inhabit, the majestic waved albatross! This is the only species of Albatross that nest entirely at the tropics and at this time the year eggs are already hatching.

In the afternoon we had a whole set of activities for everyone at Gardner bay. Those involved Kayak, snorkeling, glass bottom boat outings and scheduled rides to the beach. At the end of the day, it was time to simply grab a cocktail and revel in a gorgeous sunset!
