Cetaceans respond to seasonal changes in water temperature and the availability of prey. The extent of seasonal movements is quite variable among different species. Generally, populations of baleen whales divide their year between high latitude, cold water feeding grounds and low latitude, warm water feeding grounds. In both hemispheres, feeding is concentrated in the short polar summer months when plankton blooms fuel the food chain. Here pregnant females gorge themselves and fetal growth rapidly increases.
In the Galapagos, we can find resident pods of dolphins that regularly show up in our visiting sites. In Punta Vicente Roca, our underwater camera took for a second the incredible fast movement of a bottle-nose dolphin, as a group of them were bow-riding in front of our Zodiacs.
